Birthdays and simple pleasures
It was the kind of day I hope we have in heaven: clear, bright, warm but not too warm, a lovely breeze and time to spend with family. We went down to see my sister and her family, and my parents and my other sister, for my birthday. I really miss living closer to them - we used to be within 10 minutes of my one sister, and only a little over an hour away from my parents and one of my other sisters. Now we live 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours away from them, respectively, and I can't just go over for a cup of coffee and conversation, or buzz down the highway for a quick half-day visit.
We had a low-key day, just a BBQ lunch with awesome food and desserts. The kids all enjoyed each others' company, and the adults had plenty of time to talk. I even got to run over to my favorite ceramic studio in Vestal to drop off some glazed pieces, and pick up a few more small ornaments to work on. We stayed for pizza out with my sister's family (none of us felt like cooking or cleaning up at that point), then drove home in the warm, golden light of a perfect summer evening. We stopped at a park with a pond just for fun - we knew it had a swan, ducks, and the biggest trout I've ever seen. We fed them pellets of food from a vending machine, and I took some pictures.
Happy birthday to me - thank you, Lord, for the blessings and challenges of the past year.
